15.05.2020 | Ingérop, designer of a unique and innovative rail system for the Very Light Rail, the future tramway of the city of Coventry

Ingérop, a major player in the field of engineering and consultancy, is part of a Franco-British joint venture commissioned to develop a new type of track for the tramway for the city of Coventry in the United Kingdom. The City of Coventry, in collaboration with the University of Warwick, has entrusted Ingérop, through its UK subsidiary Rendel Ltd., as part of a research and development initiative, with the task of creating a cost-effective line adapted to the needs of a medium-sized city (330,000 inhabitants).


Important collaboration for an ambitious project
The Coventry Very Light Rail (CVLR), which is currently under development, is a battery-powered light rail project. The aim is to design an autonomous vehicle with the following features:
50 passengers per train, running day and night, for optimum service in line with the needs of Coventry resi-dents.
Within this framework, one of the essential steps for the success of the project is the design of an advanced rail type for public transport. As the creation of tracks is the main cost element in the creation of a tramway, this is a key decision criterion in comparable projects. To meet this challenge, engineers from WMG (University of Warwick), the Ingérop Group and its UK subsidiary Rendel Ltd are working hand in hand with Coventry City Council.

A research and development approach to reduce costs

To launch this research and development initiative, Coventry City Council has awarded a £1.5 million grant. The aim of the project is to design a track that can be easily laid and removed. This new design will reduce the scope of works and maintain the integrity of the gas, electricity, telecommunications and sewerage systems. It will save the authorities funding the project hundreds of thousands of pounds compared to building a traditional tram system.

Philippe-André HANNA, Director of International Transport in Ingérop, said: "Managing this cost issue is crucial for a city like Coventry. The lightness of the tram, the design of the prefabricated tracks and the fact that the existing networks (gas, electricity, etc.) are not affected are ways of reducing the cost of the works. It is therefore a particularly innovative solution that could serve as a model for the future in many medium-sized cities with high mobility challenges."

The target for the City of Coventry, WMG and the Ingérop Group is to achieve costs of £10 million per kilometre of track, compared with an average of around £35 to £50 million for a traditional tramway system adapted to large city centres, using the track design of the Edinburgh tramway in Scotland as an example.
